Defense Secretary James Mattis has ordered the Pentagon to discover why the Air Force did not report the criminal history of the gunman in the Texas church massacre to the appropriate authorities, The Washington Times reported on Tuesday.

The Air Force already has begun a review of what went wrong after it admitted that it failed to submit the criminal history of the shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley, to the FBI's National Criminal Information Center, the federal database for background checks into gun purchases, even though he had been sentenced to 12 months after being convicted in a 2012 court-martial of assault on his then-wife and stepson.

Mattis emphasized that the military must find out exactly what went wrong and correct the mistakes so that such a situation won't happen again.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, meanwhile, said his panel will also look into mistakes that were made by military procedures in the case, The Hill reported.

"We will conduct rigorous oversight of the department's investigation into the circumstances that led to this failure," the Arizona Republican senator said. "It's critical that each of the military services take the steps necessary to ensure that similar mistakes have not occurred and will not occur in the future."

In addition, some members of the Senate Armed Services Committee also have urged a wider review of the criminal cases in every branch of the military to make sure that there have been no mistakes similar to the one made in failing to report Kelley's criminal past.
