As Democrats continue to reel from Hillary Clinton's defeat, FBI Director James Comey is still facing pressure to justify his announcement that shook the final days of the campaign, The Hill reports.

"James Comey cost her the election," former President Bill Clinton said recently.

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Comey of being a "Republican operative" who aided Donald Trump's successful bid for the White House, according to The Hill.

At the heart of the issue is Comey's Oct. 28 letter to Congress saying investigators discovered new emails that could be relevant to its then-completed probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server while she was secretary of state, the website notes.

Two days before the election, the FBI announced the new emails would not change its findings in Clinton's case — particularly Comey's decision not to recommend charges.

But Democrats say the damage was already done by that time and maintain the FBI director's letter to Congress was a massive break from bureau policy, The Hill reports.

Trump repeatedly mentioned the letter during the last days of the campaign telling supporters the emails must contain something truly damning, according to the website.

Now, Comey is said to be considering a press appearance — after Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration — to tell his side of the story.

In the past, he has strongly defended the Clinton email investigation.

"We are honest people and…whether or not you agree with the result, this was done the way you want it to be done" he said.

Meanwhile, The Washington Times reports that Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook is also blaming Comey for her surprising loss.

"At the very end of the race, there were probably more undecideds than in a lot of races before," he said.

"We do think that because the director of the FBI sent two letters in what was an unprecedented intervention in the election, a total breach of protocol — yes, I think a lot of those undecideds broke against us."
