James Comey is "not a stupid man, but he's acting awfully stupid," Rep. Devin Nunes said Friday while responding to comments the former FBI director made during a CNN Town Hall about President Donald Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller's report, and other issues.
"He can do a town hall, make a lot of things up, but I think Mr. Comey is in a lot of trouble [and] he should be," the California Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "He made a mess of the FBI."
Comey was the person who leaked his own memos to make sure a special counsel investigated the president, used an unverified dossier to obtain a FISA warrant and more, said Nunes, and he "continues to make a mockery of the entire FBI and the Department of Justice."
Nunes also spoke out after Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, told Axios that the House may revive "inherent contempt powers" that would allow it to enforce subpoenas through fines.
"The whole team on the Democratic side, they have been chasing Russian governments in the closet for 2 1/2 years...here in the legislative branch it will continue to be a mockery," said Nunes. "I don't think the American people will want the investigation to continue."
Nunes also called the Senate Intelligence Committee's decision to subpoena the president's son Donald Jr. "mostly" a play by Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, rather than a call from the committee's chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C.
