During a visit to Our Center Reno, Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., thanked the staff and volunteers and discussed the “local resources” the self-described “LGBTQIA+ community center” provides for children.
According to The Washington Free Beacon, such resources include a “Queer Pagan Exploration” club, a “transdiscovery” group for pre-teens, and a controversial sex education curriculum that was banned by a Nevada school board.
The Northern Nevada Democratic Socialists of America meets at Our Center Reno, according to its Facebook page, and the community organization regularly offers “free gender-affirming haircuts,” “free legal advice” for those interested in gender transition surgery, and “drag queen story hour.”
The Silver State senator stopped by Our Center on July 8, at a time, she said, when “LGBTQ+ rights are under attack.” Rosen also reportedly took part in a series of meetings with other constituents in Reno, including a roundtable discussion with female veterans.
Rosen is up for reelection next year and Nevada is considered one of the most competitive Senate races in 2024. The Democrat incumbent is facing a primary challenge, as well as a challenge from independent Bradley Scott Wing in the general election. The crowded Republican primary field includes Army veteran Sam Brown, who was recruited by Senate Republican leaders to challenge Rosen.
The Scarleteen sexual education program, which the Washoe County Board of Education removed from its list of approved resources in 2019, is promoted heavily on the Our Center Facebook page and is listed under youth resources on the organization’s website.
Deemed one of the most controversial resources, school board minutes from the time show parents objecting to Scarleteen’s lessons on gender identity, among other things.
“It is way too much too soon for 14-year-olds and I think that's shown out in every lesson,” Nevada Family Alliance Executive Director Karen England said then. She added that “the lesson on abstinence brings up anal sex” and the lessons were “very graphic for people in their teens.”
Public comment on the proposed sex education curriculum lasted more than three hours, with the majority of parents expressing concern over the proposed changes. The school board later voted 5-2 to strike Scarleteen from the curriculum, according to the Free Beacon.
Billing itself as "a progressive, independent sexuality and relationships education media and support organization" that provides "in person outreach" to teenagers, Scarleteen offers a “How Do You Masturbate?” guide for children. The literature recommends that "pre-orgasmic people" and "younger" people engage in "a daily masturbation session, over at least several weeks."
Another guide from Scarleteen available to children is called “The Transmasculine Flow,” which offers elective hysterectomies as a solution for those looking to "affirm their gender."
Scarleteen’s internet message board allows children as young as 13 to ask questions about sex. One 14-year-old girl asked a question about a “diaper” and feces “fetish” that was answered by a Scarleteen staff member named “Sam.” He replied with a guide called the “Sex Readiness Checklist.”
