Sen. Vance: Foreign Aid Bill Holds 'Impeachment Time Bomb' for Trump

By    |   Monday, 12 February 2024 03:48 PM EST

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, claimed Monday that the Senate's latest bill for aid to Ukraine and Israel contains "an impeachment time bomb" for former President Donald Trump if he's reelected.

Vance, in a memo to GOP Senate colleagues, claimed that the "time bomb" is "buried" in the text of the legislation as a way to prevent Trump from denying further aid to Ukraine if he's elected back to the White House.

"The supplemental represents an attempt by the foreign policy blob/deep state to stop President Trump from pursuing his desired policy, and if he does so anyways, to provide grounds to impeach him and undermine his administration," Vance wrote, adding that Republicans should oppose the bill.

Vance said the bill contains billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine military financing and the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, each of which will run to September 2025, when Trump could be back in office.

According to Vance, this could lead Democrats to impeach Trump if he attempts to end or pause this financial assistance by arguing that he violated budget law. Trump has repeatedly called on the U.S. to cease sending aid to Ukraine.

"If President Trump were to withdraw from or pause financial support for the war in Ukraine in order to bring the conflict to a peaceful conclusion, 'over the objections of career experts,' it would amount to the same fake violation of budget law from the first impeachment, under markedly similar facts and circumstances," Vance wrote.

"Partisan Democrats would seize on the opportunity to impeach him once again."
