The Israeli government's allocation of $20 million more to settlements in the West Bank has been criticized by opposition parties, The New York Times reports.

The approval of the additional funds comes soon after the addition of Avidgdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu party to the coalition to bolster the most right-wing government in the country's history.

Liberman, who became defense minister when his party joined the government, lives in a settlement and has just arrived in the United States for his first meeting in his new post with Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

The government says the increased funds are needed to bolster security amid a wave of Palestinian terrorist attacks over the past eight months that have hit Israelis hard, especially those living in the West Bank.

The extra money is also being used to encourage tourism and support small businesses.

The decision comes as two former Israeli defense ministers and two former chiefs of general staff have openly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what they describe as divisive policies that threaten the country's core values and harm its international standing.
Opposition Knesset member Amir Peretz, himself a former defense minister, added that the settlements already are well-defended and the money would be better spent on helping those who live in the country's periphery, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, slammed the allocation of the funds, saying “Israel is doing everything possible to sabotage every effort to achieve a just and lasting peace,” The Times of Israel reported.
