Israel on Sunday said 82,000 fighters are “directly under Iranian authority in Syria,” and warned of Iran’s potential to “terrorize the entire free world,” CNN reports.

"Iran is turning the entire country of Syria into the largest military base in the world. In fact, Iran is trying to destabilize all aspects of Syria,” Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, told a UN Security Council meeting.

Of the 82,000 fighters, 3,000 are members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, 9,000 are members of Hezbollah and 10,000 are members of “violent Shia militias recruited from across the Mideast, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan,” said Danon.

Iran also “directly commands” 60,000 local Syrian fighters, according to the Israeli ambassador.

Danon’s comments come a day after Israel said it dealt "severe blows" to Iran and Syria when it shot down an Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace from Syrian territory.

Israel has been warning of Iran’s military presence in Syria for at least 18 months, but “it happened more quickly than people expected,” a senior Israeli intelligence official told the Times of Israel Sunday.

“The negative dynamic inherent in the Iranian presence is happening perhaps more quickly than expected,” said Chagai Tzuriel, the director-general of the Intelligence Ministry.

Iran's goals, Danon said, are, "first, destroy Israel ... second ... destabilize the region." After that, Danon said, "it is aiming for the entire world. The entire international community should be concerned about Iran."
