President Donald Trump will formalize his decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights on Monday when he meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer said on Sunday, The Times of Israel reported.

Dermer made the announcement at the opening of the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference in Washington, D.C., when asked about the threat his country faces from Iran’s presence in Syria.

“If we’re going to talk about Syria, I think it’s important for me to thank President Trump for recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Dermer said, The Hill reported.

“There’s one thing to achieve a military victory… It’s another thing to translate that military victory into a diplomatic victory,” the ambassador added. “It took us 52 years to do that, and I think it will formally be declared, that diplomatic victory, tomorrow at the White House, and the people of Israel are very grateful to President Trump.”

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981. However, that move was never formally recognized by the U.S. or other nations, who said its permanent status should be decided in peace negotiations.

Trump announced last week that "After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability."

However, the U.S. administration has not yet formalized the decision since the tweet, and no announcement had been made on when that would be done.
