White House: Israel 'Cherry-Picking' Distortions on Iran Talks

By    |   Wednesday, 18 Feb 2015 06:56 PM

Israel is "cherry-picking" information to shape its argument that the United States is not doing enough to disarm Iran's nuclear program, according to the White House.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made the comments during Wednesday's White House press briefing.

"There's no question that some of the things that the Israelis have said in characterizing our negotiating position have not been accurate. There's no question about that," Earnest said, reports The Hill.

"We've also been very clear about the fact that the United States is not going to be in a position of negotiating this agreement in public, particularly when we see that there is a continued practice of cherry-picking specific pieces of information and using them out of context to distort the negotiating position of the United States."

Israel has been critical of the White House response to Iran, particularly in the wake of reports that say Iran has intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of not only reaching Israel, but the U.S. as well. And there have been several threats from the Iranian side against Israel, including one from an Iranian cleric in November.

Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasted the ongoing negotiations the Americans are having with Iran aimed at scaling back its nuclear program.

On Wednesday, Earnest said the U.S. needs "room and the space" in order to conduct the negotiations. Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany are also taking part in the negotiations, while Israel is being kept abreast of the developments, The Hill reports.

"You could arguably make the case that there's no country that is not participating in the negotiations that has greater insight into what's going on at that negotiating table," Earnest said, referring to Israel.

"The United States has a clear stake in this outcome, but so does Israel. And that's why we're going to continue to consult with them about these talks."

Netanyahu is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress next month in what is expected to be a speech centering on the Iran threat.
