The New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade has let homosexual marchers in and now it is trying to push Saint Patrick out, according to a petition posted on Change.org.

"An agenda published by St. Patrick's Day Parade Inc. Chairman Dr. John Lahey for a meeting to be held" Thursday has as one of its items the "[r]emoval of the section which states 'The Parade will be held in honor of St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of New York and the Patron Saint of Ireland,'" the petition states.

The Catholic website Church Militant first reported the story.

A group calling itself Concerned Members of the Affiliated Organizations of the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade says parade chairman Dr. John Lahey is deliberately freezing out "Affiliated Organizations, which pay annual dues, support fundraising events and who, per the bylaws, are supposed to have a democratic voice in the parade" as he attempts to rid the parade of its Irish Catholic heritage.

In addition to the agenda item about removing official honors for Saint Patrick, the group says the meeting will also attempt to remove "the requirement that members of the St. Patrick's Day Parade committee be of Irish descent" and "the requirement that members of the St. Patrick's Day Parade committee be Roman Catholic."

The petition writers lament that the new direction comes so quickly on the heels of the move to allow a homosexual group to march in the parade in 2015.

"Many of us had believed that the inclusion of an LGBT group in [this] year's parade led by his Eminence Cardinal [Timothy] Dolan as Grand Marshal signaled an end to past controversies and would allow the parade to once again focus on all that is right and important about St. Patrick's Day and the parade. "

OUT@NBCUniversal last year became the first openly homosexual group to march in the parade's 353-year history, the National Catholic Register notes.

The Catholic news site reports a second gay group, the Lavender & Green Alliance, has been invited to march in the 2016 parade.

The Register reports parade chairman Lahey, who is also president of Quinnipiac University, referenced the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule in Ireland as he welcomed the new group of gay marchers last month:

"We are working with the government of Ireland in this anniversary year to teach our young people the lessons of sacrifice and heroism, of love and tolerance, embodied in the Irish spirit."

The news comes as Catholics are up in arms over a stark Amnesty International video in support of a campaign to legalize abortion in Ireland.

The video features foreboding music, a sinister fog-draped black and white background, and a Christian cross on prominent display as actor Liam Neeson narrates:

"A ghost haunts Ireland. A cruel ghost of the last century, still bound to the land. It blindly brings suffering, even death, to the women whose lives it touches."

The ruins of a church are later shown as Neeson states "it is the shadow of the country we hoped we left behind."
