The U.S. is seeking an investigation into whether Iran has been secretly stockpiling nuclear weapons technology and materials at an undisclosed site, The Washington Free Beacon is reporting.
The website noted that evidence of the site was disclosed last week by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an address before the United Nations General Assembly.
Now, the Trump administration is pushing international nuclear inspectors to investigate the evidence, according to the Free Beacon.
"We look to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to continue to act in a responsible and timely manner in pursuit of any credible information, including the information presented by (Prime Minister) Netanyahu, that could indicate Iran has fallen short of the nonproliferation obligations the IAEA is charged with verifying," a senior State Department official said.
Netanyahu had charged that Iran is hiding a “secret atomic warehouse” in Tehran He said Israel has shared information about this site with the IAEA and some intelligence agencies. Netanyahu said the secret activity is taking place at a warehouse concealed as a rug-cleaning operation in Tehran.
Meanwhile, the Free Beacon noted administration officials are now working overtime to get the IAEA to launch a probe.
"The United States remains determined to ensure that Iran is denied all paths to a nuclear weapon," according to the State Department official. "The United States strongly supports the IAEA's role in providing independent international verification that Iran is fully meeting its nuclear nonproliferation commitments."
