A strategy under consideration by President Donald Trump regarding Iran could imperil the sale of hundreds of jetliners to Iranian airlines, according to U.S. officials, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

At issue is an agreement put together between the U.S. and its European partners with Iran in 2015. Two American companies in particular, Boeing and General Electric, Inc., could be affected if the White House reassesses its policy towards Iran.

The fear among administration officials is that Iran could use the new jets to transport weapons and military personnel into Syria. Iran's engagement in conflicts in Yemen and Lebanon is also a concern, the article explained. In the original agreement, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear weapons program in return for sanctions relief.

Sanctions over many years have left Iran with one of the world's oldest fleets. The current deal is for the sale of almost 300 planes valued at $40 billion.

The U.S. "should not be in the business of selling aircraft to the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism," said Rep. Roger Williams, R.-Texas, vice chairman of the House Financial Services subcommittee on trade.

"The administration's position is clear. We will not issue export licenses unless we are convinced the aircraft will be used exclusively for commercial passenger aviation," said a spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

As for Boeing, while losing the deal would not financially harm the company to a great degree, a spokesman said, "We are authorized to deliver [aircraft], but we will continue to follow our government's lead with regards to all of our activities with Iran."

Trump faces a mid-January deadline to extend sanctions relief to Iran, the article explained.
