Israel Fears Iranian Attack at Olympics

By    |   Sunday, 22 July 2012 10:42 AM EDT

Israel fears Iran will stage a terror attack targeting Israeli athletes at the London Olympics which open this week, according to the Sunday Times of London.

The Olympic kickoff is this Friday and the games mark the 40th anniversary of the massacre at the Munich Games where members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and 11 were killed by a Palestinian terrorist group.

Israel has intelligence indicating that Iran was planning to use a suicide bomber against Israeli targets overseas, the Times reported.

Concern is also heightened after a bus carrying Israeli youth exploded earlier this week in a Bulgarian resort, killing five people and injuring 32. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it "an Iranian terror attack.” Since May 2011, Israel has prevented more than 20 attempted terror attacks, according to the Times, and the past few months has seen Israel thwart several terror plots against Israelis, most recently one in Cyprus and one in South Africa.

The attack is feared to be the first in a series, or a prelude to a bigger attack at the London Games.

The Israeli fears come as the main private security contractor for the 2012 London Olympics is experiencing a personnel shortfall, leading the head of the company to admit its performance was in “shambles” and forcing the British to call in U.S. agents to assist with security at airports.
