The United States is not interested in "real diplomacy" with Iran but instead is calling for the "total submission" of the country and its regime to its demands as the two countries are engaged in an "economic war," Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, said Tuesday.

"We noticed that the U.S. is trying to push Iran to its unjust demands and finally, the Trump administration left the nuclear deal, and from that point, we have seen the mess in our region, which we are seeing today," Ravanchi told CNN's "New Day."

His comments come after Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi tweeted early Tuesday that President Donald Trump's new sanctions, including on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini, mean the "permanent closure of the path of diplomacy."

Ravanchi, when reminded Iran shot down a U.S. drone, insisted that the aircraft was "definitely in our airspace," and was warned "at least four times, but they didn't listen to the warnings."

He also said Iran is engaged in "economic war" with the United States, and he called the pressure a "war crime in our judgment."

But when asked about diplomacy, Ravanchi asked how Iran can speak with an administration that is "trying to tighten the screw" on its people.

The Trump administration's sanctions on North Korea have not stopped diplomacy, but Ravanchi said the situation is different between the two countries because Iran's culture "does not accept coercion."

Trump last week called back a military strike on Iran but had the strike gone through, the region would be "in a total mess" as "Iran will not accept any attack on its territory," the ambassador continued.

"I'm not suggesting anything," Ravanchi said. "I'm just saying that we cannot be expected to sit on our hands and respond to any attack."
