Trump administration officials are telling lawmakers on Capitol Hill that Iran has ties to the al-Qaeda terror group, a claim that's being met with skepticism.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that the purported link between Tehran and the deadly group that was founded by Osama bin Laden and others could be exploited by the White House and used as justification for military intervention in Iran via the war authorization act passed in the days after the September 2001 terror attacks.

Iran has ramped up its anti-American rhetoric in recent weeks, and the United States believes the reclusive nation was behind attacks on oil tankers and oil production faculties in the Persian Gulf region.

"They are looking to bootstrap an argument to allow the president to do what he likes without coming to Congress, and they feel the 2001 authorization will allow them to go to war with Iran," Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., told the Times.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is among the administration officials who have tried to persuade lawmakers of the tie between Iran and the deadly terror group. Pompeo also said, however, that President Donald Trump is not looking to get into a war with Iran.
