MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. Department of Education has sent a letter to districts around the country reminding them that all students are entitled to a public education, whether they are legal or not.
The letter was sent to districts Friday. It tells districts that under federal law elementary and secondary students cannot be barred from enrolling on the basis of citizenship status.
The department's Office of Civil Rights is currently investigating three complaints related to enrollment and citizenship status, among other factors.
The president is expected to deliver a speech on immigration during a visit to Texas next week.
