One million illegal immigrants — including 170,000 convicted criminals — are ignoring deportation orders and roaming streets across the U.S., according to a report in The Washington Times.

"The fact that almost 10 percent of the illegal resident population has already been ordered removed and is still here illustrates just how dysfunctional our immigration enforcement system is," Jessica Vaughn of the Center for Immigration Studies told the Times.

"It also should be of great concern that 20 percent of them are conviction criminals, and that most of these are at large in our communities."

Vaughn, a policy studies director for CIS, told the Times that of the 200,000 illegal Mexicans — the most of any — thwarting deportation, about a third of those are convicted criminals.

Further, Vaughn told the Times that the non-departed break down into three categories:
  • Home countries won't take them back;
  • They take refuge in sanctuary cities;
  • Many flee on their own.
According to its website, CIS is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit, research organization that provides reliable information about the social, economic, environmental, security, and fiscal consequences of legal and illegal immigration into the United States.
