A conservative group used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to make a pro-immigration statement in a new ad airing during the cable news morning shows this week.
Sponsored by the Becoming American Initiative, the ad plays portions of a Reagan speech. It was slated to air Tuesday and Wednesday during Fox News' "Fox and Friends" and MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"Through this golden door has come millions of men and women. These families came here to work. Others came to America in often harrowing conditions. They didn't ask what this country could do for them, but what they could do to make this refuge the greatest home of freedom in history," Reagan says in the ad.
"They brought with them courage and the values of family, work, and freedom. Let us pledge to each other that we can make America great again."
The Becoming American Initiative said it is concerned with the current state of the Republican Party regarding its immigration message. The Trump administration is cracking down on illegal immigration at the southern border by filing criminal charges against anyone who illegally enters the United States.
That policy originally resulted in children being separated from their parents until President Donald Trump ended that practice with an executive order.
