In one of the largest work site enforcement operations at one location in the past decade, agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arm arrested more than 150 people Tuesday for immigration violations at Load Trail trailer manufacturer in North Texas, authorities said, according to an NBC News report.
Federal authorities said that the company, located in Sumner, Texas, was previously charged with knowingly hiring undocumented immigrants for labor and had agreed to pay more than a $400,000 fine in 2014, according to ABC News.
At a news conference, Katrina Berger, special agent in charge of HSI's Dallas office, said the authorities are "watching and we're coming. Businesses that knowingly hire illegal aliens create an unfair advantage over their competing businesses," adding that they "take jobs away from U.S. citizens and legal residents, and they create an atmosphere poised for exploiting their illegal workforce."
An ICE statement said that the Load Trail workers determined to be in the country without authorization will be "processed for removal from the United States," according to NBC.
The company issued a statement saying that "Load Trail always works diligently to abide by all laws. The actions today by… ICE are disappointing, as are the inaccuracies found in most reporting so far. Though we are surprised by today's developments, we intend to fully cooperate with the government's investigation — and to make sure the full and accurate Load Trail story is made known."
The raid comes just a few months after another large operation in June in which immigration agents conducted a series of raids and arrested 114 people at two locations of Corso's Flower & Garden center in Ohio, NBC reported.
