Acting Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Thomas Homan said Wednesday that he will "never back down" from protecting the U.S.-Mexico border.

"If you violate the laws of this country, if you enter illegally, which is a crime, it's not going to be OK anymore," Homan said in a speech at the Border Security Expo in San Antonio, Texas, Fox News reported.

Homan slammed Congress for not addressing the root causes of illegal immigration and for not acting on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

"If we get a clean DACA bill, shame on all of us. You can't address DACA and reward people that brought children here illegally and not address underlying reasons of DACA," Homan said, the Washington Examiner reported.

Homan said the time for "kicking this can down the road" is over, the Examiner reported.

"What we need is the willpower of Congress… I've been doing this 34 years, we've been talking about the same thing every year," Homan said in the speech.

"It irritates me that a politician who has never held a badge or a gun, who doesn't understand what we do every day, makes a decision of putting their own political careers ahead of the health and safety of a law enforcement officer. A shame," Homan said.

The acting director also took aim at sanctuary cities.

"They bankroll the very criminal organizations that have killed Border Patrol agents and killed special agents in ICE," Homan said in the speech, the Examiner reported.

ICE formalized a policy Wednesday on sending deportation agents to federal, state, and local courthouses. The policy said ICE will only enter courthouses for specific targets such as convicted criminals, gang members, public safety threats and immigrations who have been previously deported or ordered to exit, the Fox News report said.
