Brit Hume: Gov. Christie Victim of 'Feminized Atmosphere'

By    |   Monday, 13 Jan 2014 11:47 AM

While the news media and political pundits pile on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, reinforcing the narrative that he is a bulldozing bully, Fox News political analyst Brit Hume has a different take.

Christie is "an old-fashioned tough guy" whose persona is being ripped apart in today's "feminized atmosphere," Hume opined on weekend show Media Buzz, Mediaite reports.

"Men today have learned the lesson the hard way that if you act like kind of an old-fashioned guy's guy, you're in constant danger of slipping out and saying something that's going to get you in trouble and make you look like a sexist or make you look like you seem thuggish or whatever," Hume said. "That's the atmosphere in which he operates. This guy is very much an old-fashioned masculine, muscular guy, and there are political risks associated with that."

Media Buzz co-host Lauren Ashburn elaborated, adding that "we're so used to blow-dried candidates right now, who don't say anything that is outside of what should be political speak, and then they've got their hair perfect and if you think about Mitt Romney, the image was so carefully crafted."

Christie is in the eye of the storm following revelations that top members of his staff ordered the closing of several lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey and New York City, after the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., didn't support Christie's re-election bid.

While he is being hammered by critics, The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza writes that Christie remains atop the GOP field for 2016 presidential contenders, assuming there are no further revelations linking him to the bridge-gate scandal.

"Christie remains the candidate — with the possible exception of former Florida governor Jeb Bush — who is best positioned to build the coalition of major donors, party activists, and GOP elites necessary to win the nomination," Cillizza writes.
