Mike Huckabee believes Tulsa authorities may have rushed to judgement in charging a police officer with manslaughter in the death of an unarmed black suspect simply to appease protestors.

"There's helicopter video footage of the incident which is inconclusive in some spots and appears to support the cops' version in others. It's not clear yet whether there is more video or witness testimony to come," the former Arkansas governor said Friday on his Facebook page.

"This is usually the point where authorities would urge the public to remain calm until a full investigation is complete and all the facts are known, but that's SO last century.

"I suspect they're rushing these charges to placate protesters, but that's unlikely. And what happens if, as in Baltimore, the evidence doesn't support the rushed charges and the cops are exonerated?"

Betty Shelby, a white police officer, turned herself in Friday after prosecutors charged her with first-degree manslaughter in the death of Terence Crutcher.

"I know the protesters honestly believe that the police are rushing to judgment in shooting at suspects who may pose no threat, and if so, I agree that they deserve to be punished to the full extent of the law," Huckabee said.

"But at least police officers have the excuse that their lives depend on them making split-second judgement calls. What is the prosecutors' excuse for rushing to judgement?"
