Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee Saturday praised Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer for saying that he would oppose President Barack Obama's nuclear deal with Iran.
"Thank God for Chuck Schumer," the former Arkansas governor told the RedState confab of conservatives in Atlanta, The Daily Signal reports.
He said Schumer showed "statesmanship in the face of extraordinary opposition from his own party."
Schumer, who became the first Democratic senator to openly oppose the deal, said Thursday that his decision came "after deep study, careful thought and considerable soul-searching."
The announcement rankled Democrats, many of whom charged that Schumer was "unfit" to become the next Democratic leader after Minority Leader Harry Reid retires next year.
Schumer's decision was a major blow to Obama, as he is one of the leading Jewish voices on Capitol Hill. The Tehran accord, announced on July 1, has been bitterly attacked by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In Atlanta, Huckabee told conservatives that the United States should have never have accepted the deal and slammed Obama's contention that the alternative to the accord was war, the Daily Signal reports.
