House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes was cleared Thursday by the House Ethics Committee of allegations that he disclosed classified information earlier this year.

"The committee does not determine whether information is or is not classified," the panel's chair, Republican Rep. Susan Brooks of Indiana, and ranking Democrat, Rep. Ted Deutch of Florida, said in a statement.

"In the course of this investigation, the committee sought the analysis of Representative Nunes' statements by classification experts in the intelligence community.

"Based solely on the conclusion of these classification experts that the information that Representative Nunes disclosed was not classified, the committee will take no further action and considers this matter closed," the statement said.

Nunes, 44, the eight-term California Republican, was forced to step down from the committee's probe into Russian meddling in last year's election in April.

He had been accused of improperly disclosing classified information after viewing documents at the White House on Trump-related surveillance issues.

Nunes said in March that members of President Donald Trump's transition team had their communications legally monitored by the nation's intelligence community.

"Several leftwing activist groups have filed accusations against me with the Office of Congressional Ethics," Nunes said when he stepped aside.

"The charges are entirely false and politically motivated, and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of U.S. citizens and other abuses of power."

Nunes had denied coordinating his disclosure of the information with the Trump administration.

Bowing to pressure, however, he ceded control of the Intelligence Committee's investigation to Republican Reps. Mike Conaway of Texas, Trey Gowdy of South Carolina and Tom Rooney of Florida.
