House Democrats will hold hearings on Medicare for All, according to the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Pelosi told The Washington Post last week that the House Rules and Budget committees will hold hearings on a Medicare for All bill from Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., a leading member of the House Medicare for All caucus that holds almost 80 members.

Jayapal plans on introducing it at some point in the upcoming few weeks, and told the Post that “it’s a huge step forward to have the speaker’s support. We have to push on the inside while continuing to build support for this on the outside.”

“The critical thing here is: Do we have a commitment to waive paygo on critical bills? I think we do,” she added. “I think we’ve not only got a commitment for that, but for hearings on those bills, and we’ve never had that before.”

“I want to congratulate the House for holding hearings for the first time on Medicare for All,” Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who introduced a similar bill in the Senate, told the newspaper.

“I’m confident the results will show that Medicare for All is the way forward if we want to guarantee heath care to all people in a cost-effective way.”
