Florida Principal Backpedals After Controversial Holocaust Remarks

A principal at a Boca Raton, Florida school has apologized after claiming he could not term the Holocaust as a "factual, historical event."

According to The Palm Beach Post, Spanish River High School's William Latson corresponded with a parent on several occasions over the last year in regards to how the school taught about the Holocaust. Emails show Latson cited his position as a public school employee in saying that he needed to remain neutral on the subject of the Nazis' killing of 6 million Jews.

"The Holocaust is a factual, historical event," the mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her children, wrote to Latson. "It is not a right or a belief."

Latson responded by writing, "Not everyone believes the Holocaust happened. And you have your thoughts, but we are a public school and not all of our parents have the same beliefs."

He added that his position as an educator means he must "be politically neutral but support all groups in the school.

"I can't say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in a position to do so as a school district employee."

Latson is now walking back on his remarks, telling the Post they did not reflect his personal beliefs.

"I regret that the verbiage that I used when responding to an email message from a parent, one year ago, did not accurately reflect my professional and personal commitment to educating all students about the atrocities of the Holocaust," he told the news outlet.

"It is critical that, as a society, we hold dear the memory of the victims and hold fast to our commitment to counter anti-Semitism."

The high school has implemented some of the concerned parent's ideas into its Holocaust curriculum, including a requirement that all sophomores read a Holocaust memoir and putting on assemblies to teach students about the genocide.
