Newsmax’s James Hirsen: Obama Playing ‘Cool Factor’

Friday, 04 May 2012 09:38 PM

Newsmax’s James Hirsen, author of “Hollywood Nation: Left Coast Lies, Old Media Spin and the New Media Revolution,”  said on Fox News’ O’Reilly Factor that President Barack Obama is playing to the “cool factor,” which is undermining the seriousness of the office.

A big part of that catering to the cool factor is embodied in Obama friend and promoter -- actor and producer George Clooney, who is famously throwing a fundraiser for Obama at his Studio City digs. Those attending the exclusive affair on May 10 will do so at a cost of $40,000 a head.

However, for a wild-card chance to hob-nob with Obama and Clooney folks can buy into a reasonably priced lottery where the winner gets to crash the party with a guest without paying out the big bucks.

Hirsen agreed with host Laura Ingraham, who was subbing Friday night for Bill O'Reilly, that the more sedate presumed GOP nominee Mitt Romney attracts a less glamorous cadre of stars – like Kid Rock and Ted Nugent.

As for the Democrats, says Hirsen, Hollywood has “consistently been a cash cow.”

Ingraham and Hirsen were joined by Democratic strategist Christopher Hahn, who conceded that both candidates for 2012 are cruising into what will surely be a “very expensive election.”

“The president has to gun up,” he says. Romney has already shown that he can unleash the heavy guns: Witness his primary march through the big prize of Florida where the flood of Romney ads were about 92 percent negative.

Meanwhile, notes Hahn, both candidates will find themselves attracted to shows like Jimmy Fallon because prior to Labor Day this is typical of where many folks are getting their campaign information and even first impressions.

Making the late-night talk show circuit is a two-edged sword for the candidates, all three seemed to agree, noting that many in the electorate may be put off because they see a glaring contrast between hob-knobbing on such shows and the reality in the country during these hard times.

At one point, Ingraham challenged her guests by asking “Does anybody care what George Clooney, bless him, thinks about tax policy?”

Hirsen’s immediate reply: “No.”
