Embattled Hillary Clinton’s private email has been hosted for five years on a Microsoft Exchange 2010 server in a data center in Alabama and was at risk of being hacked, The Hill wrote citing a report.

The former secretary of state has come under fire for using her personal email account, clintonemail.com, from her homemade server to conduct official business while she was working in the Obama administration.

When her email server was initially launched in 2009, it was located in her home in Chappaqua, New York, according to Ars Technica. But in 2010, it was moved to the Microsoft Exchange server in Huntsville, Ala., the report found during an investigation of Domain Name System (DNS) records.

The email is enabled for Microsoft Outlook Web access, which could mean that Clinton’s emails faced a security risk, according to The Hill.

"That offers an avenue for attackers to attempt to brute-force their way into mail accounts by guessing passwords," wrote Ars Technica IT Editor Sean Gallagher.

"Exchange server offers some policies to block these sorts of password attacks, but using them runs the risk of denying users access at all."

Gallagher added, "Based on server data, mail.clintonemail.com is running on an instance of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with Internet Information Server 7.5, both of which have had numerous security vulnerabilities uncovered since this particular server was configured."

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is planning to investigate whether Clinton violated the State Department’s Separation Statement.

The RNC has called on the department to probe whether the former first lady had signed the form declaring that she had returned all official documents when she left the office in 2013.

"Hillary Clinton clearly violated the spirit of the Separation Statement that she compelled all other department personnel to sign," Priebus said.
