Suffolk University Poll: Clinton Leads Trump in Pennsylvania

Hillary Clinton has a 9-point lead over Donald Trump in a new Pennsylvania poll.

The results from the Suffolk University survey show 50 percent of likely voters support Clinton, compared to 41 percent that support Trump.

Clinton will officially accept the Democratic party's presidential nomination Thursday night at the Philadelphia convention.

"Hillary Clinton is flirting with 50 thanks to Philly," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Research Center in Boston. "At this point Clinton's large lead in the Philadelphia area is offsetting losses to Trump in other parts of the state. She also is amassing the support of women and thus drowning out Trump’s marginal lead among men."

Pennsylvania has voted for the Democratic candidate in the past six presidential elections, dating back to 1992. Before that, its voters selected former Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

In the Suffolk poll, Clinton's lead over Trump is 46 percent to 37 percent when Green Party nominee Jill Stein and Libertarian Gary Johnson are listed as choices.

Other key findings from the survey:

— Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was the most popular politician among voters with a favorable rating of 60 percent, followed by President Barack Obama (52 percent), Clinton (44 percent) and Trump (33 percent)

— 56 percent of those surveyed said they feel less safe living in the U.S. than they did 5-10 years ago

— 61 percent support Clinton's proposal to ban assault weapons

— 45 percent said Clinton should have been indicted over her email scandal

A national Rasmussen poll, meanwhile, found Clinton has a 1-point lead over Trump in the race for president: 43 percent to 42 percent.
