Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton made an appearance on actor/comedian Zach Galifianakis' parody talk-show "Between Two Ferns" on Thursday, in a bid to appeal to millennials.
Clinton, introduced as "Had Pneumonia" at the start, relies on deadpan reactions to Galifianakis' off-color jokes.
"How does President Obama like his coffee?" Galifianakis asks. "Like himself? Weak?"
"You know, Zach, those are really out-of-date questions," Clinton responds. "You need to get out more."
Galifianakis also poses ridiculous sexist questions like "what happens if you get pregnant? Are we going to be stuck with Tim Kaine for nine months? How does this work?"
"I could send you some pamphlets that might help you understand," Clinton replies.
Eventually they turn to Republican candidate Donald Trump, in fact one of his campaign ads plays in the middle of the episode.
After suggesting that Clinton's pantsuits make her look like a "librarian from outer space," Galifianakis asks what she thinks Trump will wear to the debate next week.
"I assume he will wear that red power tie," Clinton says.
"Or maybe like a white power tie," Galifianakis responds.
"That is even more appropriate," Clinton adds.
According to the show's executive producer, it was Clinton herself who had the idea to do the show, and the episode was mostly improvised. None of Galifianakis' questions were cleared with Clinton or her campaign ahead of time.
"It was actually her idea, strangely enough," comedian Scott Aukerman, who also directs the web series, told Politico. "She told her team she wanted to do it and that she really liked the one with President Obama, so that kind of made the process really easy. We didn't have to go through the hoops we sometimes have to go through in order to even get Hollywood people to do it."
Aukerman also revealed that the episode was taped on Sept. 9, the day Clinton was diagnosed with pneumonia, though the production team had no idea she was ill.
"We kind of went, 'she had pneumonia?!,'" he said. "We couldn't believe it. The one clue we had was that she was drinking hot water."
When asked if he thought Trump would appear on the show, Aukerman was pessimistic.
"No, we have not invited Trump to do 'Between Two Ferns. I don't think he would do it … I don't think he has thick enough skin," Aukerman told Politico. "I wouldn't be surprised if his team reached out, but I'd be surprised if it ever were to happen in the same way this happened, with us being able to improvise questions."
