Hillary Clinton has been condemned by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for her assertion this week that the two countries have to stop "funding terrorism."

Clinton made the remark after a gunman with allegiance to the Islamic State shot dead 49 people and injured 53 at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

"It is long past time for the Saudis, Qataris and Kuwaitis and others to stop their citizens from funding extremist organizations," Clinton said at a campaign stop in Ohio.

She added that they should also "stop supporting radical schools and mosques around the world."

London's Independent reports the Saudi Arabia and Kuwait embassies in Canberra, Australia, sent letters to newspaper group Fairfax Media, slamming Clinton's assertion.

"Accusations leveled against the Kingdom of being lax or of supporting extremism fails to recognize the Kingdom's leadership role in combating terrorism," the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia wrote.

The Saudi embassy said Saudi Arabia had been the victim of 26 terrorist attacks over two years and is determined to stop the "men, the money and the mindset that foremost extremism, especially violent extremism."
