About two out of three American employees have regrets regarding their college degrees, with student loan debt listed as the number one cause for regret, according to a survey from PayScale.

PayScale, which researches employee compensation, surveyed 248,000 respondents during the spring asking about regrets over their advanced degrees.

  • 33.9 percent said they have no regrets about their degree.
  • 27.1 percent regret their student loans.
  • 12.2 percent regret their area of study.
  • 11.2 percent regret not networking.
  • 5.8 percent regret the time it took to complete their degree.
  • 5.2 percent regret not achieving more academically.
  • 3.4 percent regret their choice of school.
  • 1.2 percent regret the number of degrees they’ve received.

In total, 66 percent, or about two-thirds, said they regret something about their higher education. PayScale notes that the less-common responses have “nuances” that don’t appear in the more common responses.

Older generations are more likely to express having no regrets, while millennials are much less likely to hold no regrets about any aspect of their education.

  • 28.7 percent of millennials have no regrets about their degree.
  • 37.3 percent of Generation X have no regrets.
  • 51.3 percent of baby boomers have no regrets.

The survey also found that science, technology, engineering and math majors, or STEM majors, are most satisfied with their degrees, while humanities majors are much more likely to have regrets.

PayScale surveyed 248,000 people online between April and May of 2019.
