Healthcare will play a major part in deciding the 2018 midterm elections, according to a new poll from HuffPost/YouGov.
Just under one third of registered voters surveyed chose healthcare when asked to select their top two issues, the highest of any single issue on the list provided to respondents.
- 28 percent chose healthcare.
- 22 percent chose the economy.
- 22 percent chose gun issues.
- 20 percent chose immigration.
- 13 percent said they were not sure.
No other issue garnered more than 11 percent. Democrats and independents were more likely to consider healthcare a top issue, while Republicans were more focused on immigration and the economy.
The poll also found that voters perceive Democrats as most focused on gun policies and President Donald Trump's record, while Republicans are seen as more concerned with immigration, the economy and tax reform.
"At times, a perceived mismatch between those issues and the topics on Americans' minds has served as a warning sign," HuffPost Polling Editor Ariel Edwards-Levy notes, "in a poll taken just before a GOP wave swept the 2014 midterms, for instance, Republicans were seen as sharing voters' worries about the economy, while more said Democrats were instead focused on social issues.
"This year, although neither party is overwhelmingly seen as concentrating on health care, twice as many voters say Democrats are focusing most on the topic as say that Republicans are."
HuffPost/YouGov polled 1,000 people, including 872 registered voters, online from March 23-26, with a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.
