NMX: Hannity Says Obama's Campaign 'Beneath Dignity of Office'

By    |   Thursday, 30 Aug 2012 09:39 PM

Fox News host Sean Hannity told Newsmax on Thursday that President Barack Obama’s campaign has hurt the nation by dividing Americans among racial and class lines, adding that the tenor of his re-election bid “is beneath the dignity of that office.”

“It’s like every area of division that they can create, somehow they think this is going to bring the country together,” said the top Fox News host, who is in Tampa to cover the convention.

“This does not make us stronger,” he said in the exclusive Newsmax interview.

“This hurts the country and from the president’s point of view all agree it’s beneath the dignity of that office to allow his surrogates to be saying the things that they’re saying to allow his vice president to allow the things that he’s saying,” he said.

Hannity specifically cited the Obama campaign’s suggestion that former Massachusetts’ Gov. Mitt Romney might be a felon. He also referenced racially charged statements by Vice President Joe Biden and other campaign surrogates, saying they clearly play the “race card.”

Hannity also lit into mainstream-media news coverage of the campaign, saying it often appears to follow Obama-campaign talking points. Some media outlets “just regurgitate it verbatim,” he said.

Other key points the Fox News host made in his exclusive Newsmax interview:
  • Speaking prior to former Gov. Romney’s speech, Hannity called Rep. Paul Ryan’s address “the single defining speech of this convention.” He said Ryan “very skillfully, with almost a scalpel and a great sense of humor, went after Barack Obama.”
  • He slammed the president for failing to fulfill his promises from four years ago: “The president said he’d cut the deficit in half. He gave us $5 trillion in new debt. These are fundamental failures for a president that’s spent more time on the golf course, playing basketball, and hanging out at big parties and concerts….”
  • He expressed disappointment that no conservative journalist was selected to host the October debates that are expected to be so significant. “I don’t even think I should be the person chosen,” he said. “I think that we have an incredible group of people at FOX who do a great job. Bret Baier, Britt Hume, Meagan Kelly, I mean we can go down the list of people, Shepherd Smith, that would do a great job. I don’t think anybody of opinion probably should be in that position. But I don’t think the people they chose were fair, balanced, and objective either.”
  • Hannity also said he considers it unlikely that Obama will win re-election, and is confident the Romney-Ryan ticket can get the American people to embrace conservative solutions and reforms. “In that respect there is a maturity that has set in,” he told Newsmax. “People seem to understand how deep the problem is and the need for responsible governing. Another attempt to experiment with socialism, redistribution, high taxes has failed.”
