Special counsel Robert Mueller needs to be given space to finish his Russia investigation, and speculating about what is happening regarding the probe is not helpful, former cable news anchor Greta Van Susteren told Newsmax TV.

Van Susteren sat down with John Bachman and said it's important that Mueller's probe be allowed to continue and come to a final conclusion.

"We put pundit stuff on the air and they say those things, I don't like it, I don't think it's very effective, I don't think it helps," said Van Susteren, who began her career as a lawyer. "Mueller has got to finish his investigation and in the end, he's going to have to answer as to whether it's fair or not."

Van Susteren, who has worked as an anchor on Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN, is the author of "Everything You Need to Know About Social Media Without Having to Call a Kid." She noted that Mueller's probe, which is looking at whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, demands silence behind the scenes to preserve its integrity.

"We don't know what's going on behind closed doors in that investigation. He's keeping a tight lid on it, as he should," she said. "Grand juries are supposed to be secretive. If he's convened a grand jury, it should be secret and we shouldn't know about it. But everybody's got an opinion about it.

"I'm cautious, I put on the brakes and hope that in the end that no matter what people are saying right now, no matter what terms are used, that in the end people are confident that it was fair and fair to everybody."

Mueller's probe has thus far resulted in four indictments — former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Manafort's business associate Rick Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos.

At this point, no concrete evidence has been made public that shows collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. A report this week said that Mueller's Department of Justice investigation could last well into next year.
