U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell is picking up steam to replace Nikki Haley at the United Nations, Politico is reporting.
Grenell met with White House officials last week to discuss the job, according to Politico, which attributed its information to two people in the administration.
The meeting came after President Donald Trump had appeared to dismiss picking Grenell for the post.
"He is doing so well in a position that is so important," Trump said after Haley announced she would step down before the end of the year. "Ric is doing so well that I wouldn’t want to move him. I'd personally rather keep Ric where he is."
But some of Trump’s close advisers are pushing for him, noting his past stint as the United States’ U.N. spokesman, according to Politico.
And several members of Trump’s national security team brought up Grenell’s name when they were asked to recommend a candidate for the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. post, sources told the website.
Meanwhile, a White House official confirmed his name is now of Trump’s list of candidates.
“He’s a house favorite,” another source tells Politico.
Trump has said he’s like to name Haley’s replacement in a matter of weeks so the successor can work alongside Haley until she leaves.
