Green Beret Logan Melgar had discovered two members of SEAL Team Six were allegedly pocketing money from a special fund used to pay informants in Mali, The Daily Beast is reporting.

Melgar later turned up dead.

Authorities are probing whether the two SEAL Team Six members strangled the 34-year-old the Army staff sergeant, who was found dead on June 4 in the embassy housing in the Malian capital of Bamako, The New York Times reported.

The Daily Beast reported two special operation sources claim the SEALs first offered Melgar a cut of the money, but he refused. The website attributes its information to two special operations sources.

Melgar had informed his wife, Michelle, he was troubled about two of his partners selected for an intelligence operation in Mali, according to The Daily Beast. He had told her, he would provide details when he returned home, the website reported.

Authorities almost immediately suspected foul play and have spent months investigating, The Times said. No one has been charged, but a medical examiner has ruled his death to be "a homicide by asphyxiation."

However, the SEALs told superiors that Melgar was drunk during hand-to-hand fight exercises, the Daily Beast reported. But a former U.S. Africa Command official told the website no drugs or alcohol were discovered in his body.

The two Navy SEALs have been placed on administrative leave.
