A popular GPS app directed the driver of a Jeep onto the frozen surface of Lake Champlain, and the car’s driver followed the directions.

A group of friends had borrowed another friend’s Jeep for a ski trip Jan. 12 when the mishap occurred on a foggy, rainy night, WCAX reported. The Waze app apparently directed the car down a boat launch and about 100 feet onto the frozen lake before the friends realized they had taken a very wrong turn.

Everyone was able to escape the vehicle safely, but the Jeep sank into the lake and had to be pulled out a week later by an underwater salvage company.

Diver Pierre Larocque told WCAX the vehicle was difficult to remove, but it couldn’t stay underwater because it posed an environmental hazard and could also be an obstruction to Coast Guard and other boats where it landed in the relatively shallow water.

No one has been charged in the incident, and the driver apparently underwent field sobriety tests but had only had one beer earlier on the night of the incident, according to the Burlington Free Press.

Google, which owns the Waze app, could not explain how the car ended up on the lake, and said it had not gotten permission to see the user’s driving file to try to figure out what happened, the Free Press reported. The app relies on users to report accidents and sometimes to update roads and routes.

A Google spokesperson, Julie Mossler, told the Free Press that the company encourages “drivers to keep their eyes on the road and use all environmental information available to them to make the best decisions as they drive.”

Twitter had a field day commenting on the story.
