Republicans have carved out a potential path to holding the Senate next week, a route that runs through Minnesota and Michigan.

Democrats have a strong chance of erasing their 53 to 47 seat minority and taking control of the chamber. According to The Hill, the party thinks that if it can pick up a seat in Michigan with John James and in Minnesota with Jason Lewis, it would retain its majority.

"I think it's even money, it's 50-50. There are some huge fights going on, and huge amounts of money being spent, and races are competitive, but our candidates are doing a good job. They're holding their own," Senate Majority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., said.

James is Black, and Republicans are counting on African American voters to support him in Tuesday's election.

"I think Michigan's an opportunity that people are at least somewhat aware of," Thune said. "John James has done a great job of raising money, and I think if he can turn out voters in the city, he'll do well out-state. He's got a good shot."

The problem for the GOP is that polls show the Democratic Party incumbents in the two aforementioned races — Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., and Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich. — in the lead. According to RealClearPolitics, Smith is leading by 6.3 percentage points and Peters is up 7.6 percentage points.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Democrats were outspending Republicans in several states where key Senate races are occurring, a list that included Michigan.
