Google has changed its search algorithm to provide more accurate information on the Holocaust after being criticized about a neo-Nazi website showing up as a top result in a search for whether the extermination of Jews actually happened under the Nazis.

Instead, searches will bring up top results for sites that include truthful accounts of the Holocaust as well as sites for Jewish museums, NBC News reported. The white supremacist site hasn’t appeared at the top of the list for Google results since the change.

“We don’t always get it right,” a Google spokesman admitted to NBC.

The company has since improved the algorithm — a calculating technique to figure out rankings for traffic to websites — in its internet search engine so more credible information appears in the top results.

The Holocaust controversy was brought to light when the marketing director of the Breman Museum, a Jewish heritage museum in Atlanta, Georgia, called the search results “nauseating,” according to The Guardian. The neo-Nazi site showed up at the top of the Google list after people searched, “did the Holocaust happen?”

It took three weeks for Google to take action on the Holocaust controversy, stating it could not take responsibility for directing users to hate sites, The Guardian reported.

Google's Holocaust search algorithm change is not without controversy: Some say changing the way people find information on Google to avoid controversy could lead to unfair results constant calls for changes.
