CIA Director Gina Haspel on Thursday briefed President Donald Trump on her "findings and discussions" in the investigation of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death following her visit to Turkey where she reportedly listened to an audio recording of the murder, The Hill reports.

Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post and a Saudi dissident, was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in early October by Saudi officials. Saudi Arabia initially denied any part in the murder, but backtracked following an international outcry over the crisis and blamed "rogue agents" for his death.

Haspel traveled to Turkey on Monday to review intelligence regarding the incident. Khashoggi was last seen alive entering the Saudi consulate Oct. 2. He was there to pick up marriage papers, with his fiancée waiting outside in their car. Turkish officials have blamed Saudi Arabia since the beginning, and this week President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey had strong evidence the journalist was killed in a premeditated and "savage" murder.

The Trump administration faces rising pressure to act against Saudi Arabia, its long-time ally. The president Tuesday called the shifting stories of Khashoggi's death "one of the worst in the history of cover-ups."

At the same time, Trump and his top advisers have repeatedly said the broader U.S.-Saudi relationship should not be ruptured over the killing of Khashoggi, a 59-year-old U.S.-based critic of the Saudi government. The president has emphasized that arms sales to the kingdom should not be canceled, as he believes that would only push the country to look toward Russia and China.
