President Donald Trump retweeted tough comments about Berlin’s defense spending from officials after U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell warned that the administration might redeploy troops from Germany to Poland.

Grenell’s comments were aimed at Berlin’s failure to spend more money for NATO

“It is actually offensive to assume that the U.S. taxpayer must continue to pay to have 50,000-plus Americans in Germany, but the Germans get to spend their surplus on domestic programs,” Ambassador Richard Grenell told the German press agency dpa, according to NBC News.

Thorsten Benner, co-founder of the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin, had called Grenell’s comments a “PR stunt."

But Trump retweeted Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who had written on Monday: “Why is the United States always stuck paying for everyone when prosperous nations don’t pay their share? @RichardGrenell is absolutely right. We need to re-evaluate commitments all over the world and decide what is best for America first!  @realDonaldTrump has been doing this!”

And the president also retweeted Kimberly Guilfoyle, who serves as senior adviser to his re-election campaign, who wrote: “Ambassador @RichardGrenell doesn’t waste his time with PR stunts and he doesn’t have to. President Trump has repeated praised our Ambassador in Berlin. Spot on Ric.”
