In the spring of 2016, George Papadopoulos, a former campaign aide to President Donald Trump, was in regular contact with Stephen Miller, who now serves as a White House aide, The New York Times reported Friday.

Papadopoulos, who has since admitted to lying to the FBI about his involvement with Russian officials during the 2016 presidential campaign, also wrote a major foreign policy speech for Trump last year and was in frequent contact with campaign officials, the Times reported.

In October, President Donald Trump referred to Papadopoulos as a "low-level volunteer" and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders described his involvement as "extremely limited" in the 2016 presidential campaign. Papadopoulos had suggested that then-candidate Trump travel to Russia to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, telling Miller there was an "open invitation," the Times reported.

Papadopoulos also reportedly met with "Maltese academic" Joseph Mifsud in London in 2016 who said he had high-level contacts within the Russian government and claimed to have "dirt" on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton including "thousands of emails," the Times reported. There is no indication Papadopoulos contacted the Trump campaign about the Clinton emails.

The information stems from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into claims of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election. Trump last week said he couldn't remember a meeting last year between Papadopoulos and other campaign officials where he suggested Trump meet with Putin.

"I don't remember much about that meeting, it was an unimportant meeting," Trump said at the White House. "Took place a long time — don't remember much about it."

Papadopoulos faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and supervised release as part of a plea deal with the government.
