The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford warned allies and enemies Wednesday not to underestimate the U.S. defense just because top military leaders have publicly spoken about the lack of readiness among troops.

Asserting the military's professional prowess and capability as the best in the world, Dunford pointed out that maintenance has taken a hit owing to tight budgets and high operational costs, the Washington Examiner reports.

"That point should not be lost on our enemies, our allies, or more importantly, on the men and women of the joint force," Dunford said.

"It's not about 'we're broke,' it's not about 'we don't have a competitive advantage.' It's about the standards that we've set for ourselves, which are incredibly high," he said during the Air Force Association's Air, Space and Cyber conference in National Harbor, Md, according to the Examiner.

Dunford's remarks comes after lawmakers and military officials questioned the readiness of the military amid fiscal uncertainty and tight budgets which have forced tough choices regarding priorities over maintenance and training in current operations.

The Joint Chiefs chairman highlighted that high paced operations and a complex security environment have caused stress on troops and their families. He spoke about the trauma faced by one of the servicemen who was deployed for a period for four months, and then was home for the next four months before being deployed again.

On Thursday, Dunford will testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee with Defense Secretary Ash Carter. One thing that tops his agenda which he aims to put forward to senators is the need for a predictable funding.

Dunford is also likely to address questions from Congress about other threats and the state of the campaign against the Islamic State.
