CNN: 2-Star General to Investigate Bergdahl Case

By    |   Saturday, 14 June 2014 10:26 PM EDT

A two-star general has been assigned to investigate the circumstances behind Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's capture and imprisonment in Afghanistan, CNN reported Saturday.

The unnamed senior defense official told CNN the investigator would begin working on the case next week to determine exactly how and why Bergdahl left his base before his capture. Crucial questions remain about whether he was a deserter.

The source declined to identify the general.

Bergdahl, 28, a native of Idaho, was captured in Afghanistan in June 2009 and released by the Taliban on May 31 in a deal struck by the Obama administration in which five senior Taliban officials were released from detention at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He went missing — apparently of his own free will, according to an earlier investigation — on June 30, 2009, in Afghanistan, where he was serving with the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
