Immigration jumped to the top of the most important problem list for Americans, the first time it has been in the spot since 2019, according to a Gallup Poll released Tuesday.
Five years ago, when immigration occupied the top spot, there was a surge of attempted crossings at the southern border. It also ranked as the top problem in July and November 2018 and in July 2014.
Poll results:
- 28% of Americans say immigration is the most important problem, up 8 points from last month.
- 20% say government, down 1 point from last month.
- 12% say economy, the same as last month.
- 11% say inflation, down from 13% from last month.
- 6% say poverty, hunger, homelessness, up from 5% last month.
- No other issue exceeded 5%.
The poll, conducted Feb. 1-20, surveyed 1,016 adults. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
