Frank Gaffney: Obama's Position on Nuclear Arms 'Lunatic, Fringe, Leftist'

By    |   Thursday, 20 June 2013 05:46 PM EDT

President Barack Obama's vow to cut America's nuclear arsenal, made during a speech in Berlin this week, is "lunatic fringe, leftist stuff" that will harm not help world security, according to Frank Gaffney, Jr., founder of the Center for Security Policy.

"It's definitely a throwback to utopian leftists of yesteryear," Gaffney told "the Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below.

"The president goes outside of the country to announce that he is going eviscerate our nuclear deterrent . . . rather than to talk directly to the American people about it and dresses it up in this radical, totally unrealistic utopianism."

Gaffney, whose Washington-based think tank focuses on national security issues, said Obama's plan makes the U.S. the only nuclear power to aspire in ridding the world of nuclear weapons, starting with those of America.

"The American people, I trust, believe, pray, have enough common sense to realize this is nuts," he said.

"This is lunatic, fringe, leftist stuff and it's likely to make the world a much more dangerous place, rather than less … Exercising his responsibilities as commander in chief, taken to its logical, or illogical, extreme, he could disarm the United States entirely."

He said he fears that unless Congress intervenes with legislation to make disarmament more difficult, the president may start getting rid of some weapons now held in reserve, reducing the nation's readiness.

"He's interested in having this comprehensive test ban treaty approved by the Senate. Well, it was rejected back during the Clinton years because, at the time, senators said we need to make sure that our deterrent is viable, that it is safe and reliable, and testing needs to be an option for doing that," Gaffney said.

"We haven’t tested any weapon in our stockpile since 1992. So there's a lot of uncertainty about how affective it is, reliable, and safe."

Gaffney also urged the Republicans to "find their voice as a loyal opposition on national security … On this one in particular, we need to get it right."
