CNN has Brian Stelter. Fox News Channel has Howard Kurtz. And now, NBC News and MSNBC will be able to tap the perspective of Gabriel Sherman for stories related to media and politics.

Sherman, a national editor at New York magazine and the dutiful chronicler in recent months of growing dysfunction at Fox News Channel, will serve as a contributor to NBC News and MSNBC, according to an NBC News executive. He has seen the prominence of his byline grow recently, due in no small part to his reporting on what might best be termed "L'Affair Ailes" taking place over the course of this summer at Fox News Channel. Sherman, who wrote an unauthorized 2014 biography of former Fox News chief Roger Ailes, has doggedly covered the executive's dismissal from the cable-news outlet he helped grow after growing accusations that he harassed a number of female employees at the network. Ailes has denied the allegations, but that didn't keep Fox News parent 21st Century Fox from agreeing Tuesday to a $20 million settlement with Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News anchor whose lawsuit against Ailes served as the original spark to the furor.

Sherman is expected to continue at New York magazine, this executive said, and his purview will be much greater than examining Fox News Channel. Politico previously reported Sherman's hire.

The cable-news networks have gotten a lot of mileage from employing reporters to cover the media. At CNN, Stelter appears frequently during the week, as well as on his Sunday program, "Reliable Sources," while also tweeting out news and publishing an evening newsletter on the most recent developments in the media industry. Kurtz, a veteran reporter who has covered the beat for years at The Washington Post, CNN and The Daily Beast, is equally as prolific and anchors a Fox News media affairs program, "Mediabuzz."

Talks between Sherman and NBC News have been going on for some time, this executive said. Indeed, NBC News is believed to have been considering the idea of hiring a reporter to cover the media industry for months.

Sherman has penned profiles of Rupert Murdoch, Michael Bloomberg, Sarah Palin, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and CNN president Jeff Zucker, for New York. A 2010 cover story he wrote about efforts of CNN and MSNBC to compete with Fox News won a Mirror Award, a prize given by Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications for coverage of the media industry.
