Franklin Graham called a South Carolina bill that restricts abortion after 19 weeks is "a step in the right direction that will save a lot of lives," in a Facebook post, claiming that the bill is "good news."

Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, noted that the bill was signed by the South Carolina Legislature and is now headed to South Carolina’s Republican Gov. Nikki Haley.

The bill’s sponsor, South Carolina Rep. Wendy Nanney, hopes the law is a step toward "getting rid of abortion altogether."

"That should be our prayer and our goal," Graham mentioned in the Facebook post.

"I am so excited. This is something that we’ve been working on for four years," Nanney, a Republican, said in South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Online.

The Myrtle Beach Online report said Haley confirmed in March that she was in favor of the bill. "I can’t imagine any scenario in which I wouldn’t sign it," Haley said at the time.

The bill’s ban would allow exceptions to the 19-week rule only if the mother’s life is endangered or if a doctor determines that the fetus can’t survive outside the womb.

The bill’s definition of "fetal anomaly" means it would be illegal to abort a fetus with a disability if the child could survive with it. Such anomalies are usually detected at 20 weeks, the report said.

Democratic Rep. Beth Bernstein criticized the legislation in the Myrtle Beach Online report. She said that abortion "is not an easy decision, and we’re only making it more difficult."
