Franklin Graham: When Nation Rejects Biblical Law the 'End Is Near'

By    |   Monday, 23 March 2015 08:22 PM EDT

The outspoken son of famed televangelist Billy Graham has lashed out at President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder for "jamming" an amoral agenda "down the throats of the America people."

The Rev. Franklin Graham, 62, who heads both the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the global charity, Samaritan's Purse, took to Facebook Monday with his criticism, warning that when a nation founded on "biblical laws and principles" turns "its back on God, the "end is near."

"One of the greatest threats to America is the progressives (a new name for liberals) led by President Obama and his Attorney General Eric Holder, who are trying to impose a new morality — which is really no morality at all — jamming it down the throats of the American people," Graham writes.

"America has been blessed by God more than any nation on the face of this earth. When our country was birthed, its foundations and laws were based on biblical laws and principles. We used to be 'one nation under God,' now we’re a nation that has turned its back on God. History shows that when nations do this, their end is near."

Earlier this month, Graham came under fire from some religious leaders for his comments regarding Michael Brown, also posted on Facebook.

The unarmed black teenager was fatally shot by a white police officer last Aug. 9 in a confrontation that triggered two nights of violence in Ferguson, Missouri, and weeks of protests across the country after a grand jury refused to indict the officer involved.

"Listen up--Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and everybody else," Graham wrote March 12 on Facebook. "Most police shootings can be avoided. It comes down to respect for authority and obedience. If a police officer tells you to stop, you stop. If a police officer tells you to put your hands in the air, you put your hands in the air ... It’s as simple as that. Even if you think the police officer is wrong —YOU OBEY ... Some of the unnecessary shootings we have seen recently might have been avoided."

The Rev. Jim Wallis, founder of the Christian social justice magazine Sojourners, scolded Graham for the remarks, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

"Your Facebook post makes you seem, at best, oblivious to the racial inequity in this country’s policing and criminal justice system, which is also still deeply embedded in our American society," Wallis wrote on his own Facebook page.

"At worst, your post reflects your own racial biases — unconscious or conscious. It makes me sad to read such things coming from a leader in your position. So until you are equally willing to 'listen up,' please stop making such embarrassing and divisive statements."

And other evangelical leaders wrote an open letter noting his "comments betrayed the confidence that your brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those of color, have afforded your father’s ministry for decades," they wrote, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

"Your instructions oversimplified a complex and critical problem facing the nation and minimized the testimonies and wisdom of people of color."
